The Afro-American Club of Citrus County

About Us

Afro- American Club of Citrus County
History 1989 to 2009

In 1989, Citrus County was less developed and the African American population in the County seemed to be scattered. At that time a group of citizens decided to get together and start a social club. The basic purpose of this club was to provide African Americans who had retired or relocated to the area with an opportunity to meet one another and share information. The Afro-American Social Club of Beverly Hills was formed and was made up of 15 founding members.

The fifteen founding members were Sandy and Francis Barnes, Lela and Clifford Darien, Sylvia Johnson, Gene Thompson, Carol and Tommy Thomas, Otis and Annie Gales, Ben and Mary Brown, Charles and Gloria Strider and Alma Freeman.

As the organization became more familiar with the community, the membership decided to expand its mission to include scholarships for graduating high school students and other charitable activities. As a result, in 1997, the name was changed to the Afro-American Club of Citrus County (AACCC).

As we move into 2009, our membership has grown to 115. We now are able to provide assistance in a variety of ways addressing educational and other needs of the community.

The AACCC has continued to grow in size and in its accomplishments over its history. By making a more intense effort to focus on the needs of the community and finding ways to address those needs. Staying with the main articles of its revised By-Laws of 2006, the group continues to focus on charitable and educational activities.

Over the past several years the group has been able to increase its student scholarship program from awarding one five hundred dollar award a year to an all time high in 2008 of six one thousand dollar awards, two fifteen hundred awards and four repeat awards of one thousand dollars to second and third year recipients. The club has also elected to be a supporter of the Community Action Foundation of Citrus County, Camp E-Nini Hassee GED certificate program and also made contributions for many other community needs.

Even though the club was founded in Citrus County and is predominantly African American, all are welcome to join our organization.
